According to reports, more than 120,000 Egg McMuffin were given out for free yesterday here in Singapore. 1,100 Egg McMuffins were given per stores who offers breakfast.
So what's behind McDonald's giving out of free food? Is it a marketing ploy or they're just being nice?
In my opinion it's just 100% marketing strategy. Even it's the first time that I heard about the National Breakfast Day, it's a good opportunity for the fast food giant to advertise in a big way, by word of mouth. It is also a chance to give a boost to a healthier version of Egg McMuffin, which is called "Egg White Delight." The new Egg White Delight, which will be out on April is only 250 calories compared to the usual 300 calories.
So what's the difference with the new Egg White Delight? Well, it's now yolk free with whole grain English muffin, white cheese and grilled Canadian bacon.
According to reports, the egg white embrace is one of the moves of McDonald's to rebrand itself to a hipper and more health-conscious brand. If McDonald's previous marketing standpoint were about burger and fries, they are now more focused on smoothies and apple dippers.
McDonald's sales were down 1.5% worldwide last month, which were attributed to customers cutting down on restaurant meals after higher taxes and gasoline prices affected their buying power.
