Another thorn to my fellow Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) if the proposed bill by Manila Representative Ma. Theresa Bonoan-David gets its approval.

House Bill 6195 seeks to amend Republic Act 8042 or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995. Amendment shall require every OFW to pay $50 to OWWA's Emergency Repatriation Fund before leaving the country.

From the words of Rep. Bonoan-David, she said, "The bill intends to provide the necessary measures for the government to carry out its responsibilities to assist distressed OFWs in cases of war, epidemic, disaster or calamities, natural or man-made, and other similar events, and promote their general welfare. There are millions of OFWs all over the world which the Philippine government is mandated to protect and safeguard under RA 8042 but it seems incapable to efficiently help distressed OFWs due to financial constraints."

I have recently visited the Merlion last week during my family's visit here in Singapore. It's just sad that they weren't able to see the Merlion gushing out some water.

What's the reason with the closing of Merlion? Apparently in preparation to the Merlion's 40th birthday, it is currently undergoing two months of repair and cleaning. According to reports, the renovation will cover the removing of stains and filling out of the cracks. The waveform where it rests will be replaced as well.

The Merlion was built in 1972 and was conceptualized by vice-chancellor of the University of Singapore (now National University of Singapore) Kwan Sai Kheong. It stands 8.6 metres high and weighs 70 tons. It is made of cement with porcelain plate skin and small red tea cups as its eyes.
